Tips for driving safely around big trucks

If you have ever stood beside a semi-truck and examined its structure, you will realize just how large they are. Because they are so big, they are also much heavier and more difficult to stop. Understanding how to drive safely and responsibly around a big truck can help protect you and your passengers and encourage other drivers to be observant as well. Whenever you notice a truck on the road in Pennsylvania, be vigilant and courteous in passing.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, big trucks face a variety of operating limitations that other, smaller vehicles do not. Some of the things you should be aware of when driving around a large truck include the following:

  • Increase your following distance to allow the truck enough room to navigate between lanes.
  • Never drive when you are distracted, tired or under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
  • Change lanes carefully to pass a large truck without cutting in front and causing a hazard.
  • Practice patience and realize that due to the sheer size of a semi, it is going to require more time to stop and accelerate.
  • Do not drive right next to a big truck for an extended period of time as they do have significant blind spots.
  • When stopped behind a semi, remember that they need a lot more space to make a turn. As a precaution, stay behind the truck and wait for it to complete its turn before you follow.
